We decided to stop in Winslow Arizona when we left El Malpais National Conservation Area near Grant, New Mexico. Check out our 48 hours in El Malpais blog about the amazing hiking.

What is Winslow Arizona famous for?

A large majority of Winslow AZ tourism can be attributed to one song lyric by The Eagles.

Standing on a corner in Winslow AZ, such a fine sight to see – it’s a girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me – Take it easy.

I hope you sang that last sentence because I definitely did.

Free Camping in Winslow Arizona

The Winslow Arizona Chamber of Commerce allows overnight parking in their large gravel lot within walking distance to the cute little downtown of Winslow. The lot is located next to the train tracks but for one night we appreciated the free location.

What is in downtown Winslow Arizona?

There isn’t much to downtown Winslow Arizona and and you can walk the whole area within an hour. You’ll find the lyrically famous corner with a flatbed Ford parked nearby. There were a few restaurants, a brewery, a drugstore, and a few souvenir shops.

Relic Road Brewing Company in Winslow Arizona

We decided to try Relic Road Brewing Company because they served local beers, had great reviews, and were offering takeaway during COVID-19. When we arrived, the inside bar area was fairly full of customers with little if any social distancing.

We were thankful they were offering dine-in but we decided to sit on the outside patio. The patio was empty and we felt safe enjoying our taco and beer dinner with a view of the famous “corner”.

The taco dinner special was cheap at Relic on the night we visited. However, they were just mediocre tacos and I would not get them again.

We both had flights of beers at Relic Road and really enjoyed our first brewery visit since COVID-19 started.

Traveling in New Mexico during COVID-19

We watched several families stop for a photo opportunity on the corner. Very few people were wearing masks and Arizona was a completely opposite experience from our previous few days in New Mexico where face coverings were required and most businesses were still closed.

How long before you have to dump RV tanks?

After a quick morning jog around Winslow, we headed to a local RV dump and potable water fill. As previously stated, Pippi’s (our motorhome) main limitation is tank capacity. However, at 37 foot she has much larger tanks than smaller travel trailers and gas motorhomes.

If we don’t stay in campgrounds we have to empty waste water and refill freshwater between stops. We can fairly easily make it a week before dumping but I bet we will be able to extend this interval as we gain experience. Update as of February 2021, we are able to make it nearly three weeks on our tanks.

Free RV Dump in Winslow Arizona

In my research, I found Maverick, a regional gas station chain, that offers an RV dump and freshwater refill station for free. There is a Maverick in Winslow Arizona so we dumped our RV tanks for free. This is a really nice benefit since most truck stops and campgrounds charge $10 or more for the same service.

We left Winslow Arizona heading to Page on our RV road trip from Dallas Texas to Zion National Park.
